Library of FFPW USB provides specialized library and information services to students and staff of the FFPW USB. Its main goal is to disseminate information from the area of fisheries, aquaculture, hydrobiology, ichthyology and related sciences. Its collection includes over 20,000 items.
About library
Library profile
Library of Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters (FFPW) in Vodňany is from 1st January 2012 the branch of Academic Library of University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice The library was established in 1921 together with Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology, but some books in the library are older, from 19th century. Rudolf Berka managed documentation centre since 1959 to 1992. Documentation centre published professional bibliographies and reports, as well as provided translations and selective searches from specialized fisheries literature.
The library was damaged during floods in year 2002. 1 500 library item was destroyed. Library of Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology turned into Library of Faculty of Fisheries & Protection of Waters of University of South Bohemia and from 1 January 2012 the Library of Faculty of Fisheries & Protection of Waters (FFPW) became a branch of Academic Library of University of South Bohemia. From Summer 2013 library is located in a newly renovated building of FFPW in Vodňany, which was implemented thanks to the project CENAKVA.
Library of FFPW USB provides specialized library and information services to students and staff of FFPW USB and disseminates information in the area of fisheries, aquaculture, hydrobiology, ichthyology and related sciences. Its collection includes over 20,000 items. Books, journals, reports etc. are deposited in storage. In order to search the collection, use Library Catalogue and lists of subscription journals on library websites or card catalogue in the Library of Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters USB. Library provides out-side loans for most documents.
Library collects and archives Czech and foreign print and electronic journals. Many titles of journals are unique within the Czech Republic. Library collection of journals is valuable for her integrity and continuity as well. Library has been subscribing some journals for over 60 years (e.g. Aquaculture, Rybářství). Library cooperates with foreign institutes and the inter-library exchange of documents is maintained.
Library preserves and provides access to interesting book collections. E. K. Balon Library was donated by Canadian ichthyologist and writer prof. Eugen K. Balon (1930-2013). Absolon Library is collection of books from personal library of Czech archaeologist prof. Karel Absolon(1877-1960). Prague Library is historical collection of books from the former branch of Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology in Dol near Libčice.
Significant donations enriched the library collection in years 2014-2015. Limnologist Dr. Petr Obrtlík and freshwater biologist prof. Vladimír Sládeček donated their personal book collections. Complete personal collection of books and documents was donated by researcher Dr. Tomislav Petr. Petr’s Library contains valuable publications of fisheries, freshwater biology, water management and other related fields from all continents.
Library is located in the first floor of the building of FFPW in Vodňany. Library is equipped with a computer with access to the library catalogue and databases. Library users have access to current issues of print journals, reference library, collection of dissertations, E. K. Balon Library and complete collection of publication of FFPW (Bulletin VÚRH, edice Metodik).
Library provides interlibrary loans, reference and information services.
Library is a member of International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC) and European Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (EURASLIC).
Online resources
A large number of bibliographic and full text databases are accessible via website of the Academic Library USB. Bibliographic databases provide access to abstracts or full-texts. USB subscribes online access to e-books and e-journals as well.
To log in to resources from outside of the USB computer network (e.g. from home, coffee shop),
use remote access via VPN concentrator.

The Aquatic Commons is a thematic digital repository covering the natural marine, estuarine /brackish and fresh water environments . It includes all aspects of the science, technology, management and conservation of these environments, their organisms and resources, and the economic, sociological and legal aspects.
A consortium of natural history and botanical libraries that cooperate to digitize and make accessible the legacy literature of biodiversity held in their collections and to make that literature available for open access and responsible use as a part of a global “biodiversity commons.” In partnership with the Internet Archive and through local digitization efforts, the BHL has digitized millions of pages of taxonomic literature, representing tens of thousands of titles and over 100,000 volumes.
This project is in line with the international development of Open Access, which aims at providing free access to scientific literature to the widest audience via the Internet. Find thousands of documents in all ocean and sea-related fields (aquaculture, fisheries, geosciences, ecology...).
Research & Publications in Marine Science in digital form, including preprints, published articles, technical reports, working papers and more. OceanDocs is supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) specifically to collect, preserve and facilitate access to all research output from members of their Ocean Data and Information Networks (ODINS). It is one of a number of complementary thematic digital marine and aquatic repositories including the Aquatic Commons, which is supported by the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC).
Eprints@CMFRI is the Open Access Institutional Repository of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. Research outputs of CMFRI - journal papers, conference papers, reports, theses, patents etc. - are uploaded/self-archived by CMFRI scientists who do research on fisheries and related areas. Interested users can freely download and use documents as most of them are directly accessible and full-text downloadable.

The digital repository shall contain preprints, full-texts or abstracts of journal articles, books and conference proceedings written by SEAFDEC/AQD scientists and researchers. About Austrian Library
Austrian Library in Ceske Budejovice works since 1993. Austrian libraries mediate Austrian literature and information about Austria. Austrian Library in Ceske Budejovice is one of eight Austrian libraries in the Czech Republic. Others are in Brno, Liberec, Olomouc, Opava, Plzen, Znojmo and Usti nad Labem. Austrian Library is established and supported by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in agreement with the co-operating institution from the Czech Republic.
Collection
Collection of Austrian Library consists of Austrian literature, e.g. books written by Austrian authors and literature about these authors, books focusing on Austria, its history, culture, present and professional publications Austrian authors in the history of literature, psychology, philosophy, science, etc. There are also periodicals as a part of the collection. The collection is being continuously updated.
Borrowing books
Austrian Library is located on the second floor of Academic Library USB allocated on the shelves. Fiction is arranged alphabetically by authors' names, reference books is included for individual authors.
Non-fiction literature is sorted by subject, the respective topics are marked on shelves. Borrowing books is regulated by the Library Regulations of the Academic Library.
The Austrian Library collection can be used by all registered Academic Library users (USB student or employee card holders, or USB Libraries card holders from the general public).

Austrian Libraries in Czech Republic:
The Swiss Library was received as a gift from the Swiss Embassy to the Academic Library USB. Swiss Library is located on the 2nd Floor of the Academic Library. The collection is being continuously updated. Borrowing books is regulated by the Library Regulations of the Academic Library.

Library of America is a gift from the Embassy of the United States of America. Library of America is located on the 1st floor of Academic Library USB. Borrowing books is regulated by the Library Regulations of the Academic Library.
The collection contains a set of exclusively American fiction writers.

- Academic Library supplies returning books from RLSB at the information desk on the Ground floor. Returning procedure can take 2-3 working days! Be aware of this fact in order to prevent possible overdue fines.
